Rab Se Sona Isshq’s Kanan Malhotra – A Tabla Maestro in the Making?
Monday, July 30th, 2012At the recent shoot of Zee TV’s love story ‘Rab Se Sona Isshq’, while most of the cast and crew including lead actors Ashish Sharma, Aryan Vaid and newcomer Ekta Kaul were reeling under the scalding sun of Punjab, there was one man they all turned to for respite! Providing comic (and musical!) relief on the sets was actor, Kanan Malhotra, who plays simpleton Daljeet on the show.
A trained tabla player, Kanan was thrilled to see tablas on the sets while the shaadi celebrations were being filmed. Unable to resist his temptation to play his favorite musical instrument, Kanan got down to holding his own little mehfil on the sets. And as the young lad played on, he realized that more and more people kept gathering around him.
What really caught on was Kanan singing cheesy item numbers like ‘Anarkali Disco Chali’ and ‘Munni Badnaam Hui’ while he played the tabla to a classical beat. The hilarious classical twist to these popular tracks had the actors and the crew in splits and soon Kanan’s tabla mehfils became a rage during breaks between shots and after lunch.
Speaking of his musical sessions on the sets of Rab Se Sona isshq, Kanan said, “I am not exactly Zakir Hussain but I do play the Tabla fairly well after a couple of years of formal training in my childhood. Creating funny, classical remixes of the cheapest item songs with the tabla is something that comes spontaneously to me. I’m glad the entirecrew found it so amusing. I guess it proved to be quite a stress-buster for all of us while we scampered all over the place to shoot so many episodes in a crunched 25 day shoot schedule in Punjab.”
Rab Se Sona Isshq brings to you the compelling story of beautiful Saahiba (Ekta Kaul), who deserted by her love Ranveer (Ashish Sharma) on the day of their wedding, follows her heart and chases him across continents … ! Her journey of hope rests squarely on her conviction that their love is real and will last forever … Saahiba’s love blooms in the rustic by-lanes of Punjab, transcends national borders and reaches the city of dreams – London in search of her beloved! The intersection of Saahiba’s journey with that of Daljeet (Kanan Malhotra), a simple, well-meaning, mild-mannered young man from her own hometown and his earnest attempts at helping Saahiba get through to Ranveer, the unspoken feelings he harbors for Saahiba add another interesting dimension to the story. ‘Rab Se Sona Isshq’ beautifully captures the larger-than-life illusions that innocent small-town Indians harbor about a big city like London … it tells the story of starry-eyed migrant Indians who land up in London with a million dreams, only to be dealt with one reality check after another!
Watch his talent on ‘Rab Se Sona Isshq’ - Mon-Fri 7:30pm on Zee TV, Sky 788.
