The grand awards ceremony was held at Yash Raj Studios, Mumbai where the who’s who of the industry walked the Red Carpet and the best in the business walked away with the coveted shining gold plated trophy.

This year, apart from being the World’s Biggest Viewers Choice Awards, what set Zee Cine Awards apart was its partnership with Ernst & Young as the official voting tabulator for Zee Cine Awards 2013. This was done to put to rest all speculations about film awards being rigged. Another innovation that Zee introduced this year was the ‘Free Call’ voting system in India where the viewers could vote for their favourite actors free of cost.  Abhishek Bachchan was roped in to debut as an anchor. His straight face humour kept the audiences in splits along with co-host Reitesh Deshmukh.

The performances were the talk of the town and the highlight of the event was Shah Rukh Khan’s tribute to Yash Chopra. His act was dramatic and dreamlike. He descended on the stage harnessed in a white flying horse. He romanced his leading ladies, Anushka Sharma, Katrina Kaif and Karisma Kapoor in the true Yash Chopra style. Deepika Padukone was seen performing a new dance style ‘Waaking’ by renowned choreographer and God of Dance, Shiamak Davar. Deepika’s trendsetting performance was stunning as well as glamorous. Varun Dhawan packed in some difficult steps and gave a spectacular performance on his debut stage performance. Being Shiamak’s student, Varun ensured that he met upto his Guru’s expectations and give an actioned packed performance. The tall and delicate beauty, Anushka Sharma performed on her popular tracks, Oye Boy Oye Boy Charlie & Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola. In a fresh avatar dressed like a village belle, Anushka lived up to her bubbly and vivacious demeanour. Another debutante who will be seen giving his first ever performance at the Zee Cine Awards was the very talented, Ayushman Khurana. He will be seen shaking a leg to the hit songs of all legendary actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and also his own songs. Watch out for the personal touch that the actor will showcase to each of his acts! Another performer who will  definitely leave the audiences begging for more is the stunning Katrina Kaif! Rishi Kapoor revealed that in his career of 40 years, he gave his first screen test for ‘Agneepath’ at the ZEE CINE AWARDS

Wednesday, January 30th, 2013

Rishi Kapoor was ecstatic when he received the Best actor in a negative role at the Zee Cine Awards. This was his first role as a villain and the man gave out some very interesting anecdotes in his acceptance speech. He said, “Life is really strange you know. I received an award today for a film which I had actually rejected. I had refused the role. Director Karan Malhotra & ProducerKaran Johar persisted for over a month that Ishould accept this role, but I said main koi bhaav nahi kha raha hoon.. na hi main apni price badha raha hoon. I did not have the guts … I didn’t have the courage, I had no confidence to play a negative role. I told Karan,  yaar jindagi bhar maine romantic gaane gaaye hain sweater pehan kar…I’m not cut out for the role of Rauf Lala.” But both the Karan’s didn’t pay any heed to my words.

“I was extremely scared to do play the character of Rauf Lala because I thought if I don’t look convincing in the character then because of me the film might flop. I did not want to risk this kind of a project with me in it, so I said to Karan that I’ll not do this film. But Karan would not take ‘no’ for an answer. Both the Karan’s insisted and persisted. Finally I agreed for a screen test. Just imagine, main chaalis(40) saal se kaam kar raha hoon iss industry mein but kabhi jindagi mein kisi ko look test nahi diya maine. I gave them a look test and I said yaar bewkoof lagoonga kya kar rahe ho.. it’s a suicidal mission.. you can’t take me in this role, I will not be able to justice to it. But ladies and gentleman, today I want to say that hats off to the director and producer’s conviction in me. I think they took a huge risk by asking me to play the role. This trophy of mine in every sense of the word belongs to Karan Malhotra & to Karan Johar, nobody else but them.”

On being further prodded on who is his favorite villain, the stalwart said, “I think everybody of my generation would agree with me.. its undoubtedly Pran Saab! Long live Pran Saab!! I think there was a time when mothers stopped naming their sons ‘Pran’ because they feared that they would turn out to be as villainous as the characters he played on screen.”

To catch such beautiful moments, tune into Zee TV on Sat 2 Feb at 9pm and watch the Zee Cine Awards. The Red Carpet will be televised the same day at 8:30pm on Zee TV and Zing.

When Vidya became a victim of pregnancy jokes at the Zee Cine Awards 2013

Wednesday, January 30th, 2013

Newlyweds Vidya Balan and her husband Siddharth Roy Kapur were the highlights at the Zee Cine Awards 2013 Red Carpet. It was interesting to see Vidya in the relaxed company of her bridegroom. Vidya Balan was looking resplendent in a bright golden kanjeevaram sari while Siddharth chose a simple black suit. On their first official outing as a newly married jodi, she walked the Red Carpet with her husband and posed for the shutterbugs and spoke to the media about being in a happy space now. On being asked which film she wanted to win, she quipped, “Kahaani should win for me and Barfi should win for UTV!” and slyly winked at the media smiling at her husband.

All the actors at the awards function kept wondering about Vidya’s weight and the radiant glow on her face. As she went up to collect her award, anchors Abhishek Bachchan and Retiesh Deshmukh joked about her being pregnant. Said Reitesh with a wink, “by the way, it’s very unfortunate that before Siddharth, Sujoy (Ghosh) had got Vidya pregnant!” The entire fraternity gathered at the do went still for a few seconds before bursting into peals of laughter when it clicked to them that Reitesh was talking about Sujoy’s heavily pregnant lead protagonist ‘Vidya Bagchi’ in Kahaani. The graceful actress said, “I don’t know if I should be saying this but getting pregnant has always worked for me. It worked for  me in Paa and  now in Kahaani . Maybe this is a cue for you Sid (looking at her husband). But in real life…No!!! I am not pregnant.”  The moment she said this, the king of wit, Shah Rukh Khan who was presenting the award to her said, “it’s strange Vidya that u should be saying this just after hugging me….” The crowd could not control their uncontrollable laughter at this wisecrack from SRK and had Vidya blushing red.

Vidya is now in that league of actors who have both critically acclaimed performances and box office success in her kitty. She stands for everything beautiful, real, honest, Indian and fearless. The actress spoke about Kahani as a landmark film in her career where she was shown being on a search for her lost husband. She said with a twinkle in her eyes, “Last year I filmed Kahaani which was about a woman who was looking for her lost husband…and  somewhere down the line, I found my real husband as well”. In her acceptance speech, she said, “I started my acting career with Zee TV in their show, Hum Paanch. It’s an honour and priviliege to be accepting an award on Zee’s 20th anniversary.” Catch all this drama and more on Zee Cine Awards, Sat 2 Feb at 9pm on Zee TV. The Red carpet will be telecast the same day at 8:30pm on Zee TV and Zing.

Sonu Nigam returns as host on Zee TV’s Zee Rishtey Awards

Wednesday, December 19th, 2012

The Golden boy of Indian playback composes and sings a special song that captures Zee’s  20 year journey.

He shot to fame as the charming host of Zee TV’s Sa Ra Ga Ma Pa in 1995. While his ‘chocolate boy’ good looks ensured that he was an instant click with the ladies, his superlative vocal talent catapulted his career to dizzying heights as a playback singer.  And 17 years down the line, Sonu Nigam is a power to reckon with in the industry.  Much to the delight of the creative team of Zee TV, the golden boy of the Indian playback scene has not forgotten his roots. When approached to host the annual awards ceremony of Zee TV – Zee Rishtey Awards 2012 on the occasion of the channel’s twentieth year, Sonu gave an instant nod without batting an eyelid.

You can never thank the one who gives you your first break enough. My association with Zee TV, over the years, has been extremely rewarding. So, when the team approached me to return as a host for Zee Rishtey Awards, I looked at it as a way of saying a heartfelt thanks to the channel,” said Sonu.

Sonu went out of his way to ensure that the segments he was hosting at the awards ceremony are lively and entertaining. Not only did he actively involve himself with the writing and improvising of his script as the anchor, but even composed and sang an original song that pays a tribute to Zee’s 20 years. His wife, Madhurima, designed his look as the host. Making a stylish entry on a bike, Sonu was a rockstar at Zee Rishtey Awards from the word ‘go’! He had the audience in splits as he learned a Bhojpuri item song from Zee TV’s Bihari girl Laali (Ratan Rajput). It was only after the awards ceremony was over that he revealed his mother wasn’t keeping well and that he had to miss the after-party to go attend to her. The creative team at Zee was touched by the way Sonu displayed single-minded focus and professional dedication towards making his segments of the awards show a grand success, despite his mother’s health issues.

Watch Sonu Nigam host the ‘Zee Rishtey Awards 2012’ at 9pm on 30th December, only on Zee TV, Sky 788. Watch the Curtain Raiser on 29th December at 6.30pm only on Zee TV.

Vidya & Ranbir bag top laurels at Zee Cine Awards 2012

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

‘Zee Cine Awards 2012 with Lebara Mobile powered by Neesa Basmati Rice’ turned out to be one starry night in the city of Macau, what with the hottest faces of the Indian film glitterati walking the red carpet at ZEE’s prestigious awards ceremony and some awe-inspiring dance acts and hilarious comedy gags by the showstoppers of Bollywood. The evening was hosted in style by Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra, naughtily spoofing every nominated film and sending ripples of uncontrolled laughter through the audience. The glitzy soirée saw Ranbir Kapoor and Vidya Balan picking up the top laurels of Best Actor and Best Actress respectively for their performances in Rockstar and The Dirty Picture. Zoya Akhtar made multiple trips upstage to collect the Best Film, Best Director as well as Best Story Awards for Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. While it was Shah Rukh Khan’s return as Don 2 that bagged the Jury Award for Best Actor, Vidya’s turn as Silk scored a double whammy as she took home the Jury Award for Best Actress too!

Hours before the awards show began, there was an enormous crowd building up right outside The Venetian® Macao to catch a glimpse of their favorite movie stars. Prominent amongst the celebrities walking the red carpet were actors Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Ranbir Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Vidya Balan, Dia Mirza, Kalki Koechlin,  Rishi and Neetu Kapoor, Randhir and Rajeev Kapoor, Farhan & Adhuna Akhtar, Zeenat Aman, Mithun Da and son Mimoh.

When Vidya went up on stage to pick up her well-deserved Best Actress (Popular Choice) and Jury Award for Best Actress trophies, the actress said, “This is a very emotional moment for me as I began my career on Zee TV with Balaji Productions first show on television, Hum Paanch. And now years, later, to be standing and receiving the Best Actress Award on a Zee TV platform and that too for my work in  a Balaji Production is just fabulous. Life has come a full circle with me winning not one but two awards at Zee’s awards ceremony for a film I’ve done with Ekta almost 20 years later.” Vidya also thanked her lucky mascots – her twin niece and nephew whose very presence has brought in a wave of applause and awards her way. When she coyly acknowledged her beau Siddharth Roy Kapoor by thanking a “special someone who makes every day worth living”, she sent the crowd into a frenzy.

The most exciting acts of the evening included Ranbir dancing for the very first time at an awards ceremony. The crowd went berserk when he descended from the stadium’s high ceiling on a rope wearing a harness. Besides his ‘Rockstar’ performance, the young Kapoor paid homage to his late grand-uncle Shammi Kapoor with a medley of his most popular dance hits and Shahid joined him in raising a toast to the evergreen spirit of the late Dev Anand. Later, in the course of his acceptance speech, Ranbir cheekily thanked SRK saying, “I would personally like to thank Shah Rukh for having eased out his monopoly over the awards and letting someone else take home the Best Actor trophy.” Always ready with a witty comeback, SRK quipped, “I look forward to the day when my son, in a few years, will give you a run for your money and beat you at the awards game, Ranbir!”

Shahid had the women going weak in the knees with his killer moves as he swayed to this year’s most popular tracks including the title track of Singham, his own Saj Dhaj Ke from Mausam and a catchy remix of the pop ditty ‘I’m sexy and I know it’!   Vidya Balan paid a scintillating tribute to the sirens from the South dancing to the raunchy number ‘Nakka Mukka’ and her popular ditty Ooh La La. Katrina Kaif raised the temperatures as she showed the boys what a chikni chameli she can be when she decides to! Farhan Akhtar also presented a segment of the awards show in his trademark tongue-in-cheek, witty andaaz. The immensely talented dancers of Zee TV’s Dance India Dance rocked the stage with an act that proved once again why DID is the ultimate platform for dance in the country. Representing the power of women on Zee TV were primetime show leading ladies Mitali Nag (Krishna in Afsar Bitiya), Rati Pandey (Indira of Hitler Didi) and Asha Negi (Poorvi of Pavitra Rishta) who openly demonstrated their love and adulation for Vidya Balan, an actress who has successfully transcended the medium of television and made a carved a very special niche for herself in the world of films. Adding to the festivities, The Venetian® Macao presented an exotic lion dance, laser drumming, singing gondoliers and acrobatic Shaolin monks.

As Shah Rukh went up on stage to collect his Jury Award for Best Actor (Don 2), he said, “Every award I take home is solely for my family. If it weren’t for their understanding of my profession and being there for me at all times, being the strong and stable support system that they are, I wouldn’t be half the actor I am today.”

The lifetime achievement award went to the Jumping Jack of the 80’s Jeetendra who seemed just about as pleased at receiving the award as he was about seeing his daughter Ekta Kapoor on a winning spree with The Dirty Picture. Ekta, as she went up to collect multiple awards for The Dirty Picture said, “I really have to thank Punit and Subhash ji for everything Zee has meant to me over the years. It was with Zee that I began my television career many years ago and together, we have done some very interesting work on television. Today, receiving so many awards for my film at the Zee Cine Awards means the world to me!”

As Farhan Akhtar collected his Best Supporting Actor trophy for Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, he thanked his sister in a cute way saying, “This wouldn’t have been possible without ‘The Mental…The Zoya’ … making this film with her will remain one of the most memorable filming experiences of my life!”

Zee Cine Cine Awards 2012 with title sponsor Lebara Mobile, powered by Neesa Premium Basmati Rice, in  association with The Accident Genie, Cofresh, Royal Sweets, Champion Atta, State Bank Of India and Gujarat Tourism turned out to be an evening of glitz, glamour and acknowledgement for the most deserving artistes of the world’s biggest film fraternity. From choreographers to actors, the show has given the industry dancing stars who have gone on to carve a unique niche for themselves. But even the realization of their long-held career dreams as dancers could not have prepared these youngsters for the exciting experience of rubbing shoulders with their favorite movie stars at the recently concluded Zee Cine Awards 2012 in Macau.

For Dharmesh, Shakti, Siddhesh,Binny, Amit & Falon, Bhawna, Parvez, Kunwar Amar, li’l Vaishnavi and Atul life couldn’t have got better when they along with other DID contestants, put up a spectacular performance at the awards ceremony in Macau! - a performance that made even the bigwigs of Bollywood sit up and take notice.

Actor Rishi Kapoor said, “Being quite an enthusiast when it comes to dancing, I have watched Dance India Dance a number of times on television. I must say the contestants have set some really high benchmarks of excellence in dancing. Their act at the awards ceremony was a sheer delight to watch. The contestants of DID are clearly at the top of their game!”

Choreographer Shiamak Davar who choreographed their act, said, “Putting together an act with the dancers of Dance India Dance is a joy to say the least. When you have talent that is waiting to explode, it is merely about channelizing their strengths in the right direction. I think they outdid themselves at Zee Cine Awards this year!”

“There is no denying that being a part of Dance India Dance has opened up many doors for me; ones that I previously would not have been able to even consider. Today, long after I have participated in the show, people recognize me wherever I go and that is a feeling unlike any other. SRK & Piggy Chops take potshots at Salman in a ‘Bodyguard’ spoof at Zee Cine Awards 2012

Friday, February 3rd, 2012

It is common knowledge that once-upon-a-time-buddies Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan haven’t seen eye-to-eye following their fall-out a couple of years ago. All talks of a truce have fizzled out and a cold war persists between the two superstars. It is interesting, then, to note how Shah Rukh teamed up with Priyanka Chopra at the recently concluded Zee Cine Awards 2012 in Macau and took quite a few potshots at Salman.

As hosts of the awards ceremony, SRK and Piggy Chops were spoofing every movie nominated in the ‘Best Film’ category and Sallu’s Bodyguard was one amongst them. It all started with Priyanka showing up as Bodyguard Lovely Singh, her arms a good 6 inches away from her sides à la Salman’s trademark “macho” style. SRK naughtily suggested that “Lovely Singh” should reduce the amount of starch he uses for his clothes, that way his arms would stay straight. Priyanka went on to mimic  Salman’s “international” accent. Shah Rukh also joked about why Salman’s character from the film is called ‘Lovely’ when his body is more like Bruce Lee? Jibes were made at how Salman’s shirt invariably tears itself up towards the climax of any film he does … ! All of this tomfoolery was followed by a hilarious dance to one of the Bodyguard tracks. Let’s hope Salman takes the comedy gag at his expense with a pinch of salt!

For all this excitement and a slew of mindblowing performances by the biggest stars of Bollywood, watch ‘Zee Cine Cine Awards 2012 with title sponsor Lebara Mobile, powered by Neesa Premium Basmati Rice, in  association with The Accident Genie, Cofresh, Royal Sweets, Champion Atta, State Bank Of India, Gujarat Tourism and RDH Solicitors’ this weekend.
