THE DETECTIVES

Zara Rahman

British-Bangladeshi, dynamic, focussed, career-orientated, formidable, she dresses with a unique style, sassy and individual, knows her own mind and has a throw-away sense of humour.

Born and brought up in London, an only child and raised by her beloved grandfather, Hasan Rahman, who dares Zara to go to Old Dhaka for one thing - to claim her inheritance - a half-share in the Zaman’s antiques shop.

At an early age, Zara had an insatiable curiosity, devouring every book in sight and a mind that delved into just about everything. Always she has felt that there is something missing, a sense of danger, perhaps a sense of belonging?

What would suit her better than to join in the Zaman’s adventures, cross swords with and maybe lose her heart to the dashing Abir Zaman and become the fourth member of the team?

                                                                                                                                                                 Abir Zaman

As you enter the shop, the mysterious man at the back quietly waits and studies you. If you show little interest in antiques, then he is curious. If your eyes betray despair, he watches you, alert.

Surrounded by a world of fighting against the fantastical, the weird, the supernatural, Abir is the anchor for our soul. When that time comes, and the plea to help turns into the call for adventure, simple investigation turns into saving lives, Abir is the man of action. He is a man of few words. Fearless in the face of catastrophe, armed with one indisputable truth; humanity must prevail. Always. After all, he was raised in the shadow of the Great Khalil Zaman, the man who staked his life on it.

Laboni Zaman

Hyper-intelligent, digital wunderkind yet never geeky, Laboni Zaman is not exactly your average teenager. Though she tries to be. Laboni is Abir’s cousin and family resident girl genius. She provides Zaman Inc with all their IT, technological and gadgetry know-how.

In Zaman Inc, Laboni can hotwire most things in most situations. Galvanising a metallic rod with a car battery to generate a proton plasmatic inductive system when Abir needs one. Easy. Or creating a satellite GPS navigational system with the latest memory card. Child’s play. Cheating the world computer network with a GS playpad, some jump leads and a few AA batteries. Well, that was just plain cheeky. It’s the major questions that will always keep her pondering.

She is determined to make a difference in this world she lives in, which is a good thing because she is about to be set another challenge from the supernatural.

                                                                                                                                                             Uncle Ferdous

Bumbling, awkward and constantly nibbling on a jillepi; clumsy, with a tendency to always get things slightly wrong, Ferdous was never a natural successor to the dashing Khalil. But he was the only one who remained devoted to his father’s magical world of investigation.

When Khalil passed away, Ferdous steered a different course to his brother Kabir, who dreamt of entrepreneurial success. Instead, Ferdous continued to study Khalil’s books and journals and learned the secrets of his father’s world until he knew them better than anyone else, preserving the secrets of the antiques shop ... until it was time for Abir to take over ...
